3d Animation - A Quick Start Guide

Dear World,

3D animation is a major part of 'kid culture' at the moment with movies like Little Feet, Shrek and Toy Story, but the "https://goteachthis.com/" of 3D animation software like Maya, Zbrush & Lightwave 3D excludes the students from the production of 3D artwork. Or at least until Anim8or came along. Anim8or is a piece of freeware that the kids love and can use to create 3D artwork, but be warned... the interface in a little daunting when you first fire it up and begin exploring. Stick with it though it is a great piece of software to have in your teacher toolbox.

In the New South Wales Australia our Art syllabus it encourages students to
'...experiment with computer software to produce artworks'.

Ideas for classroom activities:

* set homework to watch some 3D cartoons 'with the eye of an animator' to see what tricks you can pick up.

* design a class mascot for your webpage, blog or clip art for the school newsletter

* create a 3d version of your favourite story character

* use the software 'until it breaks' to see what you can produce

* create a monster, person, animal, robot, castle, let your imagination go.

* Visit the gallery section of www.anim8or.com as a group to see what is possible.

Tips and Tricks:

* Begin each session by pressing View / All. It is much less confusing this way.

* Pair students up and assign them all different parts of the program to experiment with and then report back to the group. This will enable you to learn the program more quickly.

* Have the students experiment with various areas of the program to see what you can get it to do.

* Explore & discuss 3D graphics on book covers, magazines and on TV then try to emulate them using The Gimp and Anim8or combined.

NB Here are a couple more free 3d packages that are on my 'to-do' list. They are a little more complex but well worth a look for your more serious students. Art of Illusion & Blender.
