Video Game Creation - Atmosphir

Summary: After several years of experimenting with making video games with students this is my new favourite tool. It is great for introducing children to the notion of gameplay before heading on to the next level of video game making.

Play the video to check out what it can do.

Atmosphir - is an online 3d environment for creating video games which requires no coding. It utilises dragging and dropping 'blocks' into a huge creation space. Atmosphir has a large community of uses and the opportunity exists to upload your games to the Internet, download the games others have created and get feedback on your game.

For me the this environment is a great place to introduce students to the basics of gameplay before heading to more complex ways of creating games. I do this through the use of a design brief.

Possible Design Brief

Your challenge today is to create the most challenging and addictive video game you can using Atmosphir.

Your game must:

  • make use of at least 4 blocks from each category
  • incorporate one of these traversable networks
  • use levels that progress from super easy through to almost impossible
  • use a start flag, a finish flag and 4 checkpoints.
  • not use weapons

NOTE - IT IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN TESTING YOUR GAME & PLAYING.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE :-)

Other stuff:

  • I tend to use this as a one off lesson & the students who really get into it use it at home.
  • For more ideas for your design brief of how to incorporate writing into this task check out this video game making design brief
  • This site can be rather slow in loading the first time you use it so log on early.
