Science Software - Google Earth / Mars

Summary: As a child Mars was revealed to me over a series of years from the blurry images of the Mariner probes, the panoramas of the Viking Landers and the World Book Year Books. The Internet then made possible almost real time Mars exploration. The recent robot probes have revealed the planet in beautiful detail. Now students can roam freely around the planet Mars.

Exploration Ideas

- Take a few of the tours esp the Rover ones done by Bill Nye the Science Guy
- Find the robot landers
- Find the most interesting features e.g. The Face, The Inca Ruins, The Highest Mountain, the Lowest Valley, the Polar Caps, the temperature ranges, dust storms, why is it red? Who named it?
- Where would you land your spacecraft to begin exploration?
- Find the most beautiful high resolution image of the Martian surface.
- Write a short play that showcases some of the most interesting features & facts about Mars.
- Write a play that outlines the exploration of Mars from the telescope to the rovers.
- explore the tick buttons on the left hand side. What can you turn on and off? Can you get it to show you the satellites in orbit around the planet?
