Computer Aided Design (CAD) Software for Students?

Google Sketchup 7
'This CAD software is one of my students favourites!'

Google Sketchup is very powerful, free Computer Aided Design software. It is simple to use and the resulting 3d models look fantastic.

I've used it with adults down to 8 year old children and they all love it.

Tips and Tricks:

- take one lesson to explore the whole toolbar with your students. Point out the bits that you know and encourage them to experiment with other features. It really is easy.

- Use the 'Import Model' icon to import objects and structures that have already been created by the Sketchup online community. (I set a maximum of 5 external downloads).

- Use the screen capture software CamStudio to capture movies of the model.

- Check out the gallery sections to see what is possible.

Possible Tasks:

- Design your ideal bedroom. Don't hold back, use the import function to bring in TVs, pianos, indoor plants, etc.
- Model one of your school buildings.
- Design your own castle.
- Design your ideal garden.
- Get the students to experiment and see what they can produce.
- Design your ideal park

For Staff Development Days:

- Design your perfect place to escape to

or

- Design the perfect staffroom - be outlandish, I want to see butlers, spas, bars. You name it, it is a possibility. Use your imagination!
